Strange Affinity

I'm reading 50 books in 2013.

A Constellation of Vital Phenomena: A Novel

A Constellation of Vital Phenomena: A Novel - Anthony Marra Upon finishing this book I felt overwhelming sadness and immense joy and let myself have a good long cry over both. I loved this book!

All About Love: New Visions

All About Love: New Visions - Bell Hooks I really enjoyed this book but all the Christian woowoo about angels and divine love and prayer is what made this 4 stars and not 5. It's really about the theory of love, there isn't much in the way of practicle advice. I marked a lot of parts to write down for further reflection though, always the sign of a good book.

Tiger, Tiger: A Memoir

Tiger, Tiger: A Memoir - Margaux Fragoso Very troubling subject matter but a well written and important memoir.

Lover Unbound (Black Dagger Brotherhood, Book 5)

Lover Unbound (Black Dagger Brotherhood, Book 5) - J.R. Ward Best BDB book because there wasn't any boring Lesser parts, which I skip in the other books.

The Never List

The Never List - Koethi Zan Stupid and implausible plot. Don't worry if you don't like graphic disturbing stuff because there are little to no details about what is actually done to the girls. The only good thing is I read it quickly.

Prodigal Summer: A Novel

Prodigal Summer - Barbara Kingsolver Wasn't a fast paced read but I loved it. Loved the characters and the way she wove nature and biology into the story.

Where'd You Go, Bernadette: A Novel

Where'd You Go, Bernadette - Maria Semple Better than I thought it was going to be. Lots of funny references to Seattle.

Confessions of a Sociopath: A Life Spent Hiding in Plain Sight

Confessions of a Sociopath: A Life Spent Hiding in Plain Sight - M.E. Thomas Absolutely painful to finish.

The Dinner

The Dinner - Herman Koch, Sam Garrett Dark, twisted, and suspenseful. I liked it!

Dark Lover (Black Dagger Brotherhood, Book 1)

Dark Lover - J.R. Ward I'm so embarrassed I read this. My coworker was trying to sell me on "smut" novels. Super cheesy romance veiled as erotic vampire tale.

Let's Pretend This Never Happened: (A Mostly True Memoir)

Let's Pretend This Never Happened: A Mostly True Memoir - Jenny Lawson Didn't like it, didn't think it was funny, and forced myself to finish it.

Moranthology. Caitlin Moran

Moranthology - Caitlin Moran I didn't understand half of what she was talking about. Not terrible but not very good. I'm glad it's over.

World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War

World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War - Max Brooks I saw the movie trailer on Hulu a couple months ago, read the comments and they were all people complaining that the movie looked nothing like the book. I'd just finished reading the Walking Dead novels, so I requested this from the library. For the most part I really liked it even if it took half the book to get into it, my favorite parts were Mets and the Chinese nuclear submarine on the run. My least favorite were the Yonkers long description of military vehicles and weapons and there being no conclusion on what happened in North Korea (my guess is mass suicide). The short stories made it feel less like a novel, it left me with a lot of unanswered questions and missing pieces. I feel like there could be a part two, More Stories From WWZ. Overall a good read even if you aren't a big zombie fan.

Don't Sweat the Small Stuff--and it's all small stuff (Don't Sweat the Small Stuff Series)

Don't Sweat the Small Stuff... and it's all small stuff - Richard Carlson I read this book like 14 years ago and there's still something in my brain that goes back to it. It reminds me not to get upset over things that are little in the grand scheme of life. For me, that speaks to the books message overall.
